cny eve eve

the eve of chinese new year's eve
as seen from the eyes of a daughter of a home-baker

the last order has been given and taken
the cakes delivered and sold
now the house is unusually quiet and still
no more late night rushing and panicking
monotonous whirring sounds all day long
stirring the batter till 2am
getting things heated up working the oven
aroma of freshly baked kueh lapis
or buy-back meals for lunch and dinner
the dozens and dozens of trays of eggs now lay empty
where hundreds of cake boxes used to stack the undusted floor reveals
the golden strings now lay amok lying scattered
stickers of red motifs with golden inscriptions randomly placed
fatigued, she lies in bed, her mind finally set at ease
but only for the next few hours till dawn breaks
for tomorrow she'll awake knowing the job is not done
for a week's hard work of baking neglected the housekeeping
it's time to spring clean.
